The Vuurboetsduin is the highest dune in the Wadden Islands. Atop this dune is Vlieland's iconic lighthouse, which despite its modest height of 16.8 metres emits a beam of light from 54 metres above sea level. From the top, you look out over the endless Wadden Sea, the North Sea and, on a clear day, even the other islands.
What makes this place special?
Workers used to keep an eye on the horizon here, hoping to find work on incoming ships. Today, there is an observation tower that offers a great view of the marina and the Richel, the drying sandy area between Vlieland and Terschelling.
Why visit?
This dune was popularly named Kikkerbult, named after the Cupido family, who ran a radar station here after World War II. The nickname of this family was ‘Frogs’, and this is how the viewpoint got its special name.
What makes this place special?
The Kroon’s Polders were created in the early 20th century as a land reclamation project and are now an important nature reserve. From the paths around the polders you can enjoy extensive views over the dunes, salt marshes and water bodies.
